Interdistrict Transfers

  • Students who reside outside the boundaries of the Azusa USD, but wish to attend an Azusa USD school, must first be released from their district of residence. Parents must present an approved interdistrict transfer release from the district of residence to the desired school of attendance along with the student’s most recent grades/transcript and attendance and behavior history. Interdistrict transfer requests may be denied or revoked for lack of space, poor attendance, lack of academic progress or behavioral issues. 

    Parents interested in enrolling their child at a school outside of the Azusa USD must request an interdistrict transfer release from the school of residence. Interdistrict transfer requests may be granted for any of the following reasons:

    • To allow the student to complete a school year when the student's parents/guardians have moved out of the district during that year

    • To allow a high school senior to attend the same school attended as a junior, even if the student's family moved out of the district during the junior year

    • When the parent/guardian provides written evidence that the family will be moving into the district in the immediate future and would like the student to start the school year in the district 

    • To meet the student's special mental or physical health needs as certified by a physician, school psychologist, or other appropriate school personnel

    • When recommended by the school attendance review board or by county child welfare, probation, or social service agency staff in documented cases of serious home or community problems which make it inadvisable for the student to attend the school of residence

    • When the student is enrolled in a multi-year, particular educational program not offered by the district of residence 

    • Other reasons, including personal hardship, will also be considered on an individual basis 

    Parents will be asked to provide documentation including proof of residence, the reason for their request and other supporting documents (school records, evidence of a multi-year program not offered by the Azusa USD, personal statement, letters of support from professionals, etc.).  Transfer requests will be denied or rescinded for falsification or misrepresentation of information or failure to enroll or disenrollment from an approved multi-year particular education program. 

    For an interdistrict transfer request, received by the district 15 or fewer calendar days before the commencement of instruction in the school year for which the transfer is requested, the district will notify the parent/guardian of its final decision within 30 calendar days from the date the request was received.

    For an interdistrict transfer request received by the district more than 15 days before the commencement of instruction in the school year for which the interdistrict transfer is requested, the district will notify the parent/guardian of its final decision as soon as possible, but no later than 14 calendar days after the commencement of instruction in the school year for which transfer is requested.

    Interdistrict transfer request forms for the coming school year will not be available until May 1 of the current school year.

    School offices are closed during the month of July and interdistrict transfer requests will not be processed at this time.

Open Enrollment and Intradistrict Transfers

  • Students who live within the boundaries of the Azusa USD who are interested in attending an Azusa USD school other than their school of residence have two options: Open Enrollment or an Intradistrict Transfer.

    The Open Enrollment window is from January 1 to May 1 of the current school year and only pertains to transfer requests within the Azusa USD for the coming school year. Open Enrollment forms are available at all school sites and the District Office during the Open Enrollment window.  Parents exercising this option are asked to complete the Open Enrollment form and return it to the school of attendance.

    Intradistrict Transfers are used when a parent would like their child to attend an Azusa USD school other than the school of residence during the current school year, or for the coming school year after the Open Enrollment window closes. Parents must request an Intradistrict Transfer release from the school of residence and present the approved release to the school of desired attendance.

    Open Enrollment Transfer
    Students enrolled in their requested school site through this open enrollment policy, who live outside the school's attendance area, will be considered to be residing in the school's attendance area for the duration of their attendance in the school site.

    Applications for Open Enrollment transfers must be submitted between January 1st and April 30th of the preceding school year for which the transfer is requested. Parents will be notified in writing by May 14th if their request has been approved. Approved applicants must confirm their enrollment for the desired school within 10 school days of the notification.
