Health Services

The department of Health Services at AUSD provides health and medical support as they relate to education in the following areas:

  • Health Screenings ~ Vision and hearing
  • First Aid ~ Acute and emergency care for all students and staff
  • Medication Administration and Monitoring
  • Home / Hospital Instruction for students unable to attend classes on campus due to medical reasons
  • Immunization Surveillance
  • Health Assessments for Special Education placement

Important Health Information

Hearing Screening

AUSD conducts mandated hearing by qualified personnel screenings in grades K, 2, 5, 8, 10th grade, new to California, teacher referral, and special education initial and triennial evaluations. (EC 49452, EC 49454) 

Immunization Requirements

Each student enrolling for the first time in the district shall present an immunization record from an authorized healthcare provider. Students shall be excluded from school as allowed by the law. As of January 2016, parents or guardians of students will no longer be allowed to submit a personal beliefs exemption to a currently required vaccine. As of January 2021, new medical exemptions can only be issued through the California Immunization Registry-Medical Exemption website by physicians licensed in California.

To Register for TK/Kinder, you will need:
-Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis
-Polio
-Hepatitis B
-Measles, Mumps, and Rubella 
-Varicella 

To enter 7th grade, you will need:
-Proof of Tdap
-Proof of 2 Varicella

Medications at School

Per California Education Code (EC) 49423, any student who is required to take medication during school hours may be assisted by school personnel if the school receives a Request For Assistance With Medication During The Regular School Day form completed by a California licensed health care provider and the student's parent or guardian. The medication form is valid for one year.  All medication should be delivered to and from the school by the student’s parents or guardian in the original pharmacy-labeled or manufacturer’s container. Please schedule medication outside of school hours, if possible.

Medication includes prescriptions, over-the-counter medication, nutritional supplements, and over-the-counter remedies such as cough drops.

A student may be allowed to carry and self-administer prescription medication if the school receives a Request For Assistance With Medication During The Regular School Day form and a self-administration form completed by a California licensed health care provider and the student's parent or guardian.

Vision Screening

AUSD conducts mandated vision by qualified personnel screenings in grades K, 2, 5 and 8, new to California, teacher referral, and special education initial and triennial evaluations. (EC 49452, EC 49454)  Male students in the first grade are also tested for color vision. (EC 49452, EC 49454)

Required Health Exams

First Grade Entry Health Examination:  California law requires evidence of a comprehensive health screening 18 months prior to entry into first grade or within 90 days thereafter.

Kindergarten Oral Health Assessment:  California law states your child must have a dental check-up by May 31 of his/her first year in public school.

Type 1 Diabetes

Pursuant to Education Code Section 49452.6, the California Department of Education developed Type 1 Diabetes information in collaboration with the California Department of Public Health and California School Nurses Organization to provide information to parents and guardians of incoming elementary school students.

Stock Epinephrine

Anaphylaxis is a rapid, severe, allergic response triggered by foods, medications, insect stings, latex materials, exercise or by unknown causes.  This is a life-threatening allergic condition requiring immediate treatment.  The reaction can occur within seconds or minutes of encountering the allergen.  California Education Code section 49414 requires school districts to provide emergency epinephrine auto-injectors in the event that an anaphylaxis reaction occurs.  

 

Type 2 Diabetes

Pursuant to California Education Code Section 49452.7, the California Department of Ed developed Type 2 Diabetes information in collaboration with the CDPH, American Diabetes Association, and the California School Nurse Organization, to provide information to parents and guardians of incoming seventh-grade students.
