It is the expectation that students of the Azusa Unified School District will maintain positive and punctual attendance to all of their assigned classes. Students are expected to arrive on time, prepared to learn and actively participate in the curriculum and educational activities planned for the day.

Procedures for Reporting Student Absences
Parents must report the student's absence(s) and the reason for the absence within 5 days of the absence.
Absence(s) from school shall be excused only for health reasons, family emergencies, and justifiable personal reasons, as permitted by law, Board policy, and administrative regulation. (Education Code 48205)
If the reason for an absence has not been reported the the school within the 5 school days period, then the absence will be changed to Unexcused.

Commonly used Aeries Attendance Codes
Student Absence:
If a Student is marked absent from class by a teacher, then the parent(s) or guardian have 5 days to clear the absence via phone or written note
Attendance Code - A
Excused Absence:
A parent of guardian has contacted the school and provided a written note or verbally provided a board approved reason for the absence(s)
Attendance Code – X
Unexcused Absence:
The school office has not received a parent note or phone call to verify and clear the absence within 5 school days
The absence(s) do not meet one of the approve reasons as defined in AR 5113 Absences and Excuses
Attendance Code – U
Medical Absence:
Parent or guardian has provided a Medical note that verifies the student was absent from school due to a medical appointment or related medical visit to a health care professional

Commonly used Aeries Attendance Definitions
Chronic Absenteeism: Means a student who is absent for any reason on 10 percent or more of the school days in the school year, when the total number of days the student is absent is divided by the total number of days the student is enrolled and school was actually taught in the regular schools of the district, exclusive of Saturdays and Sundays. (Education Code 60901)
Truant: Means a student who is absent from school without a valid excuse three full days in one school year, or tardy or absent for more than any 30-minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combination thereof. (Education Code 48260)
Habitual truant: Means a student who has been reported as a truant three or more times within the same school year, provided the district has made a conscientious effort to hold at least one conference with the student and the student's parent/guardian after either of the two previous reports. (Education Code 48262, 48264.5)
Chronic truant: Means a student who has been absent from school without a valid excuse for 10 percent or more of the school days in one school year, from the date of enrollment to the current date, provided the district has met the requirements of Education Code 48260, 48260.5, 48261, 48262, 48263, and 48291. (Education Code 48263.6)
